Abstract

400,316. Making bearing-cages. STRICKLAND, S. A., 1405, Balmoral Avenue, and BOWER ROLLER BEARING CO., 3040, Hart Avenue, both in Detroit, Michigan, U.S.A. May 18, 1932, No. 14138. [Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv).] Punching ; punches. -A. series of perforations 14 is formed in a bearing-cage 15 or other annular article by a number of non-pivotal punches supported and guided for bodily rectilinear movement in a member which is movable vertically into and out of the plane wherein the punches are brought into operative engagement with the work. The head 1 of the device, actuated by the vertically movable ram of the press, has bolted thereto a guide ring 3 in which is slidable, but non-rotatably guided by keys 5, a block 4 preferably split as shown and providing guideways for the arms 10 of punching tools 13. The blank 16 is supported on a die block 20 bolted to the base plate 21. The parts are shown in Fig. 1 at the. conclusion of the punching operation in which the tools 13 have entered co-operating passages 24, through which the punched out portions pass. At the commencement of the operation the head 1 is raised, and the block 4 separated therefrom by the action of springs 7. On downward movement of the head, the block is lowered to seat on the die block 20, further downward movement then compressing springs 7 and causing a spreader 33 to force the tools radially outward to form the holes, as in Fig. 1. On return movement of the head, an ejector 25 is raised by a spring 28, the punches being retracted during relative movement between members 3, 4, when an inclined surface 19 on each punch is engaged by the inner surface of the ring 3. Forging; dies.-The edges of the perforations 14 are bevelled in a similar machine, in which the tools comprise operative portions 42, Fig. 6, of the form shown. A resiliently held gauging-member 41 enters one previously punched hole 14 to locate the work. The spreader 33 in this machine carries an extension which depresses the ejector cup at an early stage of the operation to ensure free engagement of the work with the member 41.
