Abstract
383,487. Making rings. RINGFEDER GES. and BRESSER, L., 19, Topstrasse, both in Uerdingen, Niederrhein, Germany. Feb. 8, 1932, No. 3745. [Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv).] Forging-machines; dies ; punches.-Rings, especially for ring springs, are made from blanks of small diameter compared with the finished ring, by upsetting the heated blank over a mandrel, and then completing the hole expanding, and forging without further heating. Cylindrical blanks are placed on end between dies 3, 5, and upset over the forming member 6 to fill the space between the dies. A number of lower dies 5 may be carried on a table 10 rotatable about a spindle 11 and locked by a device 12 to allow cooling between successive operations. The blank 2, Fig. 3, is transferred to a second press comprising a lower annular die 13 and a central upwardly spring- pressed mandrel 19. The hole is formed by the descent of a punch 14, which, on further downward movement, forces down the punchedout portion and the member 19 against the action of a spring 18 while expanding the blank over its tapered portion. Upon the head 17 engaging an arm 20, it is lowered to compress the blank between the members 16, 13. On the upward movement, the member 20 serves as a stripper for the work while the member 19 ejects the punched-out portion. A sequence of operations is described comprising sawing a blank from a rod, heating, forging, reheating, rolling, and then sizing the working surface accurately in a further press. The blank is then tempered and hardened.
