Abstract

255,295. Gutberlett, H. Nov. 30, 1925. Rollers.-In a method of making rollers for bicycle chains circular blanks are stamped from a strip 1 by a punch 3 and are cupped to the form shown at 8, Fig. 1, in a die 7 by a punch 4 guided within the punch 3, the latter being guided at 2. The cupped blanks are removed by a spring ejector 10 and are transferred to a die 19, Fig. 5, in which they are upset and pressed to a cylindrical form by a hollow punch 11 having a central spring- controlled plunger 17, which partially punches out the bottom 12 of the blank 8, leaving a projection 14 which serves to guide the blank in a groove to the finishing punch. The plunger 17 is adjustable in its holder 15 by a screw 24 and a lock-nut 23, and if desired may be mounted rigidly so as to punch out the bottom of the blank completely and finished the roller. An ejector 22 is provided. The unfinished blanks are transferred to a die 29<1>, 30<1>, Fig. 6, in which the punching out of the bottom 12 is completed by a punch 25 guided in a bush 29. For each operation several punches and dies are preferably provided to produce several rollers simultaneously.
