Abstract

Forging nuts; dies; shearing-adjuncts.-In a nut-blank-forging machine a piece of metal 35, Figs. 3 and 4, cut from a bar 30 by cutters 32 as usual, is forced into a die 10 by a punch 8 which partly forms the hole therein and then into one of the dies 9 by one of the punches 7. Two dies 10 are carried by a plate 3 oscillated by a cam. 18, after each stroke of the press, to transfer the partly formed blank to a position over the dies 9, 9 alternately whence it is forced into this die by the corresponding punch 7. At the commencement of each stroke a spring plunger 41, Fig. 2, presses the plate 3 down, against the action of a spring 12, so that a projection 33, Fig. 3, on the fixed plate 2 closes the bottom of the die 10. The acting punch 7 forces the nut over a fixed piercing-punch 29, Fig. 2, and against a crowning- punch 28 which is raised against the action of a spring 27, by heads 36 of bars 37, Fig. 1, connected to the press head 1, engaging a cross bar 25, thus ejecting the finished blank. The wad is ejected from the upper punch 7 by a rod 23, Fig. 2, which has a projection 38 adapted to engage a fixed member 39.
