BOX STAMPING AND DRAWING TOOL Filed Feb. '19, 1930 Patented May 10, 1 932 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
FRIEDRICH EISENLOHR, OF CANNSTA'IT, GERMANY, ASSIGNOR TO BLECHDOSEN- UNI) PLAKATFABRIK K. G., OF CANNSTATT, GERMANY BOX STAMPING AND DRAWING TOOL Application filed February 19, 1930, Serial No 429,783, and in Germany February 25, 1929.
The progressive mechanizing of work requires to-day packing boxes, the closure of which is so shaped that a reliable and quick pasting over of the box edges is possible with the known bandarolling machines. For this purpose it is necessary for the upper part of the box, where the lid engages, no matter whether the box be round or square, to be smaller in diameter by the thickness of the sheet metal, that is set off, an operation which cannot be carried out on existing machines. Consequently a device must be produced which enables the production of this absolutely cylindrical box, when the lid is in'position.
This mannerof manufacturing the boxes 7 this tool, the construction of which forms,
the object of this invention.
This invention goes still further in that it provides a tool, which cuts out, draws and expands in one operation.
An embodiment of the invention is illustrated by way of examplein the accompanying drawings in which:
Fig. 1 shows the tool in longitudinal section, the left side showing the tool in raised position and the right side in lowered position.
Fig. 2 shows a finished box drawn and set off in one operation. 7
Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the drawing die.
A. combined cutting and drawing tool, known per se, is constructed so that a drawing ring 5 is built separately movable in a cutting die a. This ring I) is fastened on two bolts 0 and pressed down bysprings (Z. Further a drawing die 6 is composed of segments and made expandible. This is effected by a conical insert 7". During the downward movement of the upper part an ejector g presses in its lower position upon the conical insert 7', whereby the segment jaws of the drawing die 6 are pressed apart.
The operation is as follows:
upper part of the sheet metal is first cut out and drawn in the usual manner. 'In its lowest position the ejector presses on theconical insert f, so that the segment jaws of the drawing die 6 expand and press the sidewall of the already finished drawn box over the ledge 71/ of the drawing die 5, thus producing the set off edge on the tin box, Fig. 2. Dur- I ing the upward movement of the upper part the box is held in the cutting die a by resilient balls 'imounted around same and is ejected in known manner in the extreme upper position by the ejecting'device 7c.
In this manner boxes of any shape and.
having a set off edge of any desired shape can be made by suitably shaping the draw-' of said plunger and means for expanding said sectional plunger whereby to expand a portion of the box. 7 I
2. A device as specified in claim 1 further. characterized by having incombination cooperating cutting rings, a blank holder ring adapted to move into and out of an annular channel surrounding said plunger, and a spring actuated ejector means moving in a central cavity of said die for automatically ejecting the work. I
In testimony whereof I afiix my si nature.
