Abstract
186,876. Smith, A. H. Sept. 16, 1921. Buttons.-In making buttons by piercing, a blank is severed from a metal strip by a pair of relatively movable dies, the fixed die of which carries one or more tools for piercing or raising and also a movable ejector, so that the article is formed and finished in one operation of one set of tools. The fixed die consists of a blankpunching die 34, and a cupping die 36, into which headed piercing tools 37 are secured by a screw 39 so as to facilitate replacement. It also contains a positively-actuated slidable ejector 35, which surrounds and supports the piercing tools, the end face of the ejector being engraved or otherwise shaped to serve as a marking punch or as a planisher. The movable die 31 has a cupped recess 32 and holes 33 in alignment with the piercing tools. The dies are arranged so that the metal of the strip is partly bent befora severing.
