Abstract
516,049. Making cupped articles. JONSSON, J. E. Feb. 6, 1939, No. 3910. [Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv)] In making cups from thin sheet metal such as aluminium, the cups are formed from blanks which in shape are either regular or substantially regular polygon or substantially circular and are formed from a strip the width of which is either equal to the distance between two parallel faces of the blank or to the diameter thereof when the blank is circular. The strip 2 is fed by the rollers 1 to a pair of punches 8 which remove the triangular portions B, Fig. 2, and thus divide the strip into a series of attached polygons. The blanked strip then passes to the drawing dies 3, 4 which also include a severing attachment 15, 16 to sever the polygonal blank in the first movement the drawing dies then completing the shaping of the cap. The punches and male part of the drawing die may be carried in the same reciprocating head 13. The punches may cut away portions which give a series of attached substantially circular blanks of diameter equal to the strip width. When a tearing tab is required, the metal is only cut away to the line 18. '
