228,587. Hardman, F. Oct. 1. 1923. Hollow-ware.-Perforated lids are made from sheet metal, cardboard, &c. by tools which cut out, shape, and perforate them at one operation. The sheet j<1>, Fig. 8, is fed over a lower tool comprising a fixed cutter B<1>, fixed punches D<2>, a male cupping die C', which may have a small free movement limited by a set screw C<7> and slot C<s>, and a pressure ring E<1> held up by a rubber buffer F acting through rods f<5>. The upper tool comprises a female cupping die H' having a cutting edge h<1>, a perforating die K<1> and ejector rods k<2> normally held up by a spring m<3> but adapted to be operated, when the upper tool rises, by a lever m<5> and adjustable stop (not shown). When the upper tool moves down a circular or other blank is cut out, cupped, and' perforated. On the return movement the blank is stripped from the punches D<2> by the die C<4> and pressure ring E<1>, then from this die when' it is arrested by the screw C<7> and finally from the die H<1> by some of the rods k<2>, the others serving to eject the punchings. Both punchings and lids may be blown into a receptacle by air blasts. The tools are preferably arranged in a press working in an inclined direction. A pad P, Fig. 7, saturated with lubricant may be placed between the die C<4> and its support C in order to lubricate the punches.
