Abstract
697,441. Making cupped articles. MANUFACTURE DE MACHINES DU HAUT RHIN SOC. ANON. Jan. 30, 1952 [Feb. 5, 1951], No. 2525/52. Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv). Forging.-A method of increasing the bottom thickness of a metallic cup by cold forging comprises placing said cup into a closed die having a restricted lower portion, said cup resting on the portion intermediate the restricted and upper portions of the die, upsetting the bottom of the cup so that it fills the restricted portion of the die and thereby imparting the desired bottom thickness to the cup. A stamped cup 1 is placed in a closed die 5 having a lower restricted portion 7 the bottom of the die being formed by a punch 9 which also serves as an ejector after the upsetting operation. Co-operating with the die is a punch 2 having an end portion 4 and a shoulder 3, said end portion having the form of the cup cavity. The shoulder 3 of the punch engages the cup wall edge and the end portion 4 operates against the bottom of the cup cavity. Downward movement of the punch forces the metal constituting the bottom of the cup into the restricted bottom portion of the die thereby imparting the desired bottom thickness to the cup. The bottom thickness may be increased by up to 60 per cent of its initial thickness.
