Abstract

604,200. Casting-machines. MADISON. KIPP CORPORATION. Feb. 27, 1945, Nos. 4911 and 4912. Convention. dates, June 30, 1944, and Nov. 3, 1944. [Class 83 (i)] In die casting, the molten metal is raised into the die as a non-turbulent slug by a plunger having about the same cross-section as the die cavity, substantial pressure on the metal only being developed when the die is full and being maintained while the metal solidifies. In a machine, for casting pistons, having cores 9, 11, 15 operated as described in Specification 550,595, the charge of metal in a well 17, adjustable as described in Specification 481,829, is raised into the die through a passage 16 having the same diameter as the well 17 and as the head of the piston being cast. The stroke of the plunger 18 is limited by a stop 22 so that it forms the end face of the head and for this purpose it is appropriately shaped, e.g. as in Fig. 3, to form deflector on the piston of a two-cycle engine. The die has overflow chambers E and G each communicating with a relief cylinder 27, 28 containing a plunger 23, 25 sustained by a hydraulic press 24, 26 adapted to yield under the maximum pressure of the plunger 18, e.g. 10,000 lbs. per square inch. During solidification, the plungers 23, 25 supply molten metal to make up for shrinkage. In a modification, the stop 22 and the two cylinders 27, 28, &c. are omitted, the plunger 18 advancing during cooling to make up for shrinkage. In this case, the face engaged by the plunger 18 is finally machined off.
