Abstract

889,451. Extruding; working at specified temperatures; making ingots. BRITISH IRON & STEEL RESEARCH ASSOCIATION. June 23, 1960 [April 21, 1959], No. 13547/59. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). In the extrusion of steel alloys of the type whose carbon content is sufficiently high to form, when the alloys freeze, a eutectic which appears as large cells, which contains little or no austenite and can be hardened by quenching to give a substantially martensitic structure, a cast ingot of the alloy is maintained at or above the maximum extrusion temperature for such time that the structure of the alloy becomes more homogeneous upon subsequent cooling, and the ingot is then extruded at the maximum extrusion temperature. A high-speed tool steel alloy is cast in a graphite mould, allowed to solidify, stripped from the mould and, if necessary after fettling, and machining, transferred to a furnace where it is maintained at a temperature of 1250-1300‹ C. for half to one hour. Alternatively, the cast ingot may be cooled and annealed before transfer to the furnace. For some alloys, the temperature may be maintained above maximum extrusion temperature and the ingot subsequently cooled to extrusion temperature. After extrusion the product may be quenched in air, oil or hot salt and temperature. The product is finally ground to finished size and steam tempered and nitrided. Examples are given for the extrusion of a particular tool steel alloy. Twist drills may be extruded by using a fluted extrusion die.
