Abstract

1,078,781. Casting-machines and foundry plant; forging; working at specified temperatures; making door handles and clips for railways. J. F. W. SCHLEGEL. July 27, 1964 [April 26, 1963], No. 7688/63. Headings B3A, B3F, B3H and B3V. Cast metals are cooled from the molten state to a transition range in which low temperature crystal lattice elements begin to form and are then forged without the temperature dropping below this range, the forged workpieces having substantially the same mass as but a larger surface area than they had before forging. Cast iron is melted in a graphite rod electric furnace 1, discharged into a crucible 2 and poured into split moulds 4 carried on a rotary table 3. After ejection from the mould the cast workpieces are placed in a soaking furnace 5 to cool down to the transition range whereupon they are forged in press 6 which may be operated by a hammer or by a screw. The workpieces may be transferred manually or mechanically to and from the soaking furnace. Each mould, Fig. 2 (not shown), comprises two parts (7, 8) which can be opened or closed by pneumatic or hydraulic means (9) and when opened pins (10) engage an abutment (12) and eject the casting. The feeder heads are sheared off by means (13) actuated by a pneumatic or hydraulic motor 14. The invention may also be used with aluminium alloy or commercially pure aluminium. Reference is made to making door handles, Fig. 3 (not shown), clips for railway rails, Figs. 5, 6 (not shown), door furniture, window fasteners, connecting rods, high tensile bolts and screws, brake discs and bearing races. Working at specifced temperatures.-Cast iron is forged within the range 906-721‹ C. Aluminium is forged at 450-480‹ C.
