Abstract
1,204,548. Fe-P alloy; extracting copper. KENNECOTT COPPER CORP. Nov.3, 1967 No.50166/67. Headings C7A and C7D. A ferrous metal product, useful as a precipitant for Cu values in solution, is in the form of a mass of discrete and particulate fragments of metallic iron-base alloy consisting, except for impurities, of metallic Fe, and 0À6 to 4% by weight of P to make the metal brittle and easily fragmented. The product may contain not more than 0À3% by weight of Si as impurity. The fragmented metal may be made by melting metallic Fe, supplying sufficient P thereto, solidifying the molten metal and breaking the solidified metal. The Fe may be scrap iron (almost entirely steel) or pig iron. The P may be supplied by ferrophosphorous or by phosphate rock with coke as a reducing agent. The melting may be carried out in a foundry cupola or in an electric furnace. The solidified metal, e.g. slabs, chips or plates, may be fragmented by impact crushing, e.g. in a hammer mill, and a final crushing in a rod mill.
