Abstract

595,510. Making magnetic powder. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd., and BUCKLEY, S. E. May 14, 1945, No. 12064. [Classes 83 (i) and 83 (ii)] Foundry moulds.-A process for manufacturing finely-divided magnetic material comprises melting magnetic material, adding thereto an embrittling agent and casting the molten material into ingots of such size, shape and construction that the ingots so formed are cooled so rapidly that a fine grained crystalline structure substantially free from long needle-like crystals is produced throughout the greater part of the ingot. A molten nickel-iron alloy containing an embrittling agent is cast into a mould comprising two side plates 1 of mild steel or cast iron about three feet square, pressed by clamps 3 on to a U-shaped spacing piece 2 about “ inch thick. The side plates may be water-cooled. Pouring is facilitated by a refractory tundish 4. After cooling, the cast material is broken into fragments in a hammer mill and the pieces ground to a fine powder. The fragments may be reheated to the temperature of recrystallisation and rapidly quenched in cold water from that temperature before being ground into powder. As a further alternative, the mould may be taken apart as soon as the ingot has cooled to the temperature of recrystallisation and the ingot then quenched in cold water. Specifications 564,651 and 587,138 are referred to.
