713,885. Ingot moulds; chills. ENGLISH STEEL CORPORATION, Ltd.. GRAY, B., and BURTON, H. H. Feb. 26, 1953 [March 20, 1952], No. 7233/52. Class 83 (1) In a method of producing castings, ingots &c. in steel or other alloys utilizing a mould having a feed head, liquid metalin the upper part of said head is caused to freeze as quickly as possible whilst the metal in the lower part of the head is maintained at as high a temperature as possible so as to remain liquid. A chill 5 of cross-shaped upper part, Fig. 6, is inserted into the ingot head 1, depending portions 5a projecting into the head. Other forms of insertable chills are described, or, alternatively, the upper part of the mould-head may be made wholly or partially of cast iron to provide the requisite chilling effect.
