Abstract

858,298. Casting processes. FOUNDRY SERVICES INTERNATIONAL Ltd. Oct. 21, 1959 [Oct. 27, 1958], No. 34376/58. Class 83 (1). In the head of a big-end-down ingot mould there is provided a lining of heat-insulating or. exothermically-reacting material in quantity sufficient to delay the solidification of the metal at the head of the mould, but not so great as to prevent the formation during cooling of a solid bridge across the mould at a point lower in the mould but above the point of maximum heatcontent of the molten metal. The secondary pipe is thereby prevented from oxidizing, and its surfaces will be satisfactorily welded together when the ingot is rolled.
