695,736. Casting processes. HUTTENWERK HORDE AKT.-GES. April 3, 1951 [April 5, 1950; Dec. 22, 1950], No. 7730/51. Class 83 (i). A process for improving the yield of sound metal from rimmed or unkilled steel is characterized in that, when the ingot has solidified until a rim free from blowholes has been formed and a little of the surface either remains molten or has been reformed by heat or mechanically, de-oxidizing agents having lower melting points than steel, e.g. aluminium, silicon or titanium, are added in such quantity that partial " killing " occurs and this, with subsequent rapid cooling, prevents air from entering the ingot. Cooling may be assisted by introducing solid scrap or applying a heat-dissipating cover, e.g. water-cooled. The cover may have a projection on its lower face to engage the molten metal and cooling ribs on its upper face, the lower face may be of cast iron or steel and the upper of a good heat-conducting alloy.
