524,479. Casting processes; moulds. PIEL, C. Jan. 31, 1939, No. 3235. Convention date,. April 13, 1938. [Class 83 (i)] In making castings from non-ferrous metals, such as copper alloys, in metal moulds, the mould is arranged with its gate 4, Fig. 1, below the mould cavity 2 when pouring is started but is tilted during pouring until it reaches the position shown in Fig. 3 when the mould is full, air escaping by vents 5, 6. The process may be used when casting unpurified melted waste metal. For hollow castings sand or metal cores are used. The mould is preferably shaken during casting and cooled to 100‹C. between each pour, the molten metal being cast at about 100 to 200‹C. lower than usual. The alloys used may contain over 50 per cent. of copper and small quantities of silicon, manganese, aluminium, beryllium, thorium, magnesium or calcium.
