Abstract
405,842. Casting processes. VEREINIGTE STAHLWERKE AKT.-GES., 67, Breitestrasse, Dusseldorf, Germany. April 24, 1933, No. 11908. Convention date, May 2, 1932. [Class 83 (i).] To avoid coarse crystallisation in steel, zinc, or other metallic castings, solid material, isomorphous with the metal or alloy to be cast, is added thereto before or during pouring. The molten metal should be hot enough partly to melt the added material leaving a large number of unmelted crystal nuclei. The added solid may be some of the same metal or alloy as that to be cast or may be a slightly different alloy so as to melt at a higher temperature. The solid may be thrown into the ladle, or into the stream of metal or be placed or secured in the mould, for instance in the form of rods or wires which may be thinner adjacent the mould walls. The added solid may comprise from 0.1 to 5 per cent of the casting and may be coated to prevent corrosion or scale forming, for instance, a bar of nickel coated steel may be used.
