Abstract

545,102. Heat treating iron alloys. MOND NICKEL CO., Ltd. May 20, 1941, No. 6482. Convention date, May 30, 1940. [Classes 72 and 82 (i)] [Also in Group XXII] Process for producing cast iron, in which the composition of the melt, the casting temperature, the pouring time, and the rate of cooling are so correlated that the iron, as cast, containing 1.5 per cent. to 3.4 per cent. of carbon of which 0.4 per cent. to 1.0 per cent. is non-graphitic, 1.0 per cent. to 4.75 per cent. of silicon, 1 per cent. to 6 per cent. of nickel and 0.2 per cent. to 1.5 per cent. of molybdenum, comprises needles of ferrite in an austenitic matrix. Iron containing 3.4 per cent.-1.5 per cent. of carbon, 3.25 per cent.-1.25 per cent. of silicon, 1.6 per cent. of nickel and 0.2 per cent.-1.3 per cent. of molybdenum, according as the predominent section of the casting varies from 0.25 to 60 inches is rapidly poured, at 2575‹F. to 2800‹F., into a sand or chill mould, silicon equivalent to 0.2 per cent.-1 per cent. being added to the ladle in the form of ferro-silicon, calcium or other alkaline earth metal silicide, silicon carbide, zirconiumsilicon &c., and the casting preferably being cooled from 1500‹F. to 400‹F. at 125-275‹F. per hour and lower alloy contents being used when the cooling is more rapid, i.e. when a chill mould is used. The casting is finally heated to 350- 800‹F. for 1-100 hours to convert more or less of the austenite into an acicular constituent according as high tensile strength or hardness is desired. The iron may contain minor constituents and impurities, e.g. under 0.25 per cent. of sulphur, 0.45 per cent. of phosphorus, 2.5 per cent. of manganese, 3.5 per cent. of copper, 0.5 per cent. of chromium or a smaller amount of borax, 0.2 per cent. of aluminium, 1 per cent. of cobalt, and 0.3 per cent. of titanium, calcium, or zirconium. The inoculant should contain 1.5 per cent. or more of aluminium and is preferably a constituent of the ferro-silicon &c. added.
