Abstract

209,043. Holley, E., (Assignee of Meloche, D. H.). Dec. 26, 1922, [Convention date]. Purifying and refining.-Soft castings are produced in permanent moulds coated as described in Specifications 201,913 and 202,273, [Class 83 (i), Casting &c. metals], and employed in the casting-machine described in Specification 186,906. The iron should have a silicon content of 2.75 per cent and a manganese content lower than 0.4 per cent. The total carbon content is from 2.5 to 3.75 per cent and the combined carbon is less than 0.7 per cent. In melting not more than 10 per cent of low carbon scrap should be added, and the melting zone should be confined to a few inches. The metal is poured at a temperature above 2200‹ F. and the casting is ejected from the mould at 1650‹ F.
