Abstract

A method of producing alloy steel comprises evacuating a chamber containing the molten metal until turbulence ceases, adding the alloying elements while preventing entrance of the atmosphere, renewing the turbulence by introducing an inert gas into the steel, and removing the degassed, alloy steel from the chamber. As shown, steel may be poured from a ladle 25 into a vacuum chamber 10 in which, after the steel has been degassed, alloying elements may be added from a container 18. An inert gas, e.g. argon, from a tube 41 may be passed into the metal after slightly opening the stopper 13. When alloying is complete, the gas is shut off, the stopper 13 fully opened and the molten steel passed into a heated chamber 31 after melting a plate 39. The metal may then pass through a side opening 42 into a <PICT:0961610/C6-C7/1> continuous mould 43 and may then pass to rolls 46 before the centr of the ingot has solidified.
