Abstract

117,519. Hosack, H. H. Aug. 14, 1917. Moulds. - An ingot or other casting is caused to cool and solidify slowly by preventing the radiation of heat from the mould a, by surrounding it with a vacuum or partial vacuum. The mould may be previously heated. In one form, the mould a is placed in a vacuum chamber having inner walls c<2> and outer walls c, the lid also having inner walls d and outer walls d'. In a modification, the mould a itself forms the inner walls. The jacket may only extend part of the way down the mould, so that the casting is cooled faster at the bottom than at the top.
