Abstract

A plain carbon or low alloy steel (i.e. one containing a maximum of 5% of alloying elements other than those specified) which is austenitic in the as quenched state comprises:- .N.0.5 - 5.0% .C.0.01 - 0.3% the balance, apart from impurities, being iron. The nitrogen may be introduced into the steel melt by contacting the melt with nitrogen gas under superatmospheric pressure and quenching from a temperature above 950 DEG C (e.g. 1000 DEG C).
