Abstract
A cold-rolled steel sheet or strip for enamelling use e.g. 1.6 - 2.5 mm. thick containing less than 0.01%C is produced by (a) hot-rolling a low carbon rimmed or semi-killed steel containing 0.03 to 0.12%C e.g. at 870-910 DEG C., (b) allowing it to cool in air to room temperature, to produce a secondary mill scale layer on the steel surface and then decarburization annealing the steel in tight coil form in a non-oxidizing gas to remove the desired amount of carbon by oxidation with the scale layer, (c) cold-rolling with 30-80% reduction, annealing in a non-oxidizing gas for recrystallization and then temper-rolling with 0.5-1.5% reduction. Annealing may be effected in H2-N2, e.g. HNX gas containing 5% H2 and rest N2 of - 40 DEG C. dew point, at a temperature from 650 DEG C. to the A1 point. After decarburization annealing and prior to cold-rolling, the steel sheet or strip may be pickled in H2SO4 or HCL.
