Abstract
A process of producing magnetic sheets with predominant (100) [001] grain texture from iron alloys containing 2 to 4.5% silicon, up to 0.08% carbon, up to 0.5% manganese, balance iron, comprises first annealing a hot rolled sheet of the alloy at 900-1200 DEG C. for 1-50 hours in a protective, preferably decarburizing, environment, such as in an atmosphere of hydrogen, dissociated ammonia, or in a vacuum of less than 200 microns, to produce grains with diameters averaging at least half the thickness of the hot rolled sheet, e.g. 0.02-0.2 inch such as is produced by hot rolling slabs or ingots of the alloy at the above temperature, then cold rolling the annealed sheet to size in a single stage to effect reduction by 60 to 95%, and finally annealing at 1000-1425 DEG C. for 2-50 hours in a reducing environment, e.g. in a vacuum at less than 25 microns or in hydrogen having a dew point of - 35 DEG C. or less, to obtain secondary recrystallization, such that any continuous oxide films disappear during the final anneal, preferably by pickling the sheet prior or subsequent to the first anneal. An alloy containing 0.041% C, 0.019% S, 0.019% P, 0.10% Mn, 3.19% Si, 0.0072% Al, 0.0028% N, balance Fe, is specified.
