Abstract

An extremely low carbon thin iron sheet suitable for deep drawing, one-coat enamelling or electro-magnetic use is made by producing a hot rolled steel strip, cold-rolling this strip with a reduction ratio of 40-95% to form a cold-rolled low carbon steel strip having a thickness of 0.5-2.0 mm and a carbon content of less than 0.12%; subjecting this strip, in the form of an open coil, to a first recrystallization annealing including decarburization to form a low carbon iron strip containing less than 0.02%C; subjecting this strip to a second cold-rolling with a reduction ratio of 40-95%; subjecting the iron strip to a second recrystallization annealing after the second cold-rolling and finally subjecting the strip to temper rolling with a reduction ratio of 0.5-2.0%. The strip may be electrolytically cleaned after each cold-rolling. The annealing-decarburization process is carried out in an atmosphere of hydrogen, nitrogen and steam at a temperature of 600-900 DEG C. for 5-40 hours. The second recrystallization annealing is carried out in an atmosphere comprising (a) 5% CO2, 10.5 CO, 12.5% H2, 0.5% CH4, 70.7% N2 and 0.8% H2O or (b) 0.05% CO2, 0.05% CO, 5% H2 the rest being N2, at a temperature of 600-700 DEG C. for less than 4 hours. To render the iron non-ageing it may contain 0.003-0.02% of boron or 0.02-0.05% of vanadium.
