Abstract
A stainless steel alloy which may be precipitation hardened has the composition: Si 2.0-4.5 per cent; Mo 1.5-4.0 per cent; Be 0.05-0.5 per cent; Cr 17.0-21.0 per cent; Ni 7.0-14.0 per cent; C up to 0.2 per cent; Fe and impurities, the remainder. The alloy may also include misch metal up to 0.3 per cent and Cu 1.0-4.0 per cent. A heat treatment is described consisting of heating at 2000 DEG F. for one hour followed by water quenching and hardening by heating at 925 DEG F. for eight hours. The use of a higher solution temperature of 2250 DEG F. is also referred to.
