Abstract

An alloy that is readily machineable at room temperature and can be hardened to show an essentially martensitic structure has a composition, in per cent by weight, in the following range C 0.1-0.3, Si up to 0.5, Mn 0.5-1.5, Cr 9.0-14.0, Mo 2.0-4.0, Cu 1.0-3.0, N from 0.06 up to the amount that can be retained in solid solution and still produce sound steel, Fe and impurities the balance. Ni, if present, should not exceed 0.5 and carbide-forming elements such as W and V should not exceed 0.1. A specimen of the alloy was normalized for two hours at 1700 DEG F., soaked for one hour at 1900 DEG F. and then oil-quenched to harden it. The hardened alloy was drawn by heating for two hours at 1300 DEG F. A further sample of lower C content was subjected to the same treatment except that it was drawn at 1250 DEG F. The alloy is particularly suitable for use as steam turbine parts.
