Abstract

A method of making cast tools of high speed alloy steel comprises subjecting the cast tools to an annealing treatment for 1-8 hours at 1050 DEG -1200 DEG C. before carrying out the usual hardening treatment. Cast tools made from an alloy comprising 0.6-2% C, up to 1% Si, up to 1% Mn, 3-10% Cr, 0.5-23% W, 0-12% Mo, 0-8% V, 0-23% Co, 0-3% B, 0-3% Al, 0-6% Ti, 0-6% Zr, 0-10% Nb, 0-10% Ta, up to 0.5% N, and the remainder Fe, may be annealed for 1 hour at 1100 DEG C., cooled in air, preheated to 850 DEG C., heated to 1230-1260 DEG C. in a fused salt bath, quenched in oil, and double tempered at 570 DEG C.
