Abstract

A process for heat treating cast iron castings of at most 20mm thickness and containing at least one element which slows down the transformation of the iron selected from Cu, Ni, Ti, Al, Zr, Cr and Mo comprises rapidly cooling the casting from the casting temperature to room temperature, transforming the residual austentite to martensite by treatment at a temperature, transforming the residual austenite with nucleation of the graphite, and effecting graphitization at a temperature higher than the tempering temperature. The casting may be quenched from 800 DEG C. in a liquid medium and then treated in liquid nitrogen, followed by tempering at 440-450 DEG C., cooling in still air, and graphitizing at 875-890 DEG C The cast iron may have the following analysis: 1.18-3.5% C: 1-3% Si: 0.6-2% Mn: 0-3% Cu: 0-3% Ni: 0.05-0.15% S+P: 0-0.15% Ti: 0-0.15% Al: 0-0.3% Zr: 0-0.25% Cr: 0-0.20% Mo: the balance being iron.
