Scrap, consolidating.-Scrap metal, which may be oxidized, is mixed with metal powder and pressed or heated or both preferably in an inert or reducing atmosphere. The scrap may be purified and comminuted, after preliminary treatment, to induce brittleness if desirable. The powder may be of the same composition as the scrap metal or comprise other metals, alloys, or materials, such as carbon or silicon, which will alloy with the scrap metal. The powder is obtained from metal carbonyls where possible. Thin sheet-iron scraps, from 1 to 3 s.c.m. in size, may be mixed with powder, heated to 950‹ in an atmosphere of hydrogen and rolled into a sheet. Scrap rods, 15 m.m. in diameter, produced in rolling a sintered iron ingot made from the carbonyl, are embedded in fresh iron powder made from the carbonyl, sintered at 600‹ C. and rolled.
