Abstract
Liquocellulose particles containing up to 30% water are mixed with one or more metal oxides or hydroxides to give a solid material which is heated under pressure for a time and at a temperature sufficient to form a reaction product of the oxide or hydroxide with the liquocellulose. Other reactants may also be present and are exemplified. During the reaction lignin is thought to be released to act as a binder. Steam is preferably present during reaction, supplying both heat and the water necessary for the hydrolysis of the liquocellulose. The product may be shaped, and depending on the plasticizer used, may be thermoplastic or thermosetting. Specifications 925,524 and 925,525 are referred to.
