Abstract

Liquocellulose particles containing up to 30% water are mixed with one or more reactants to give a solid material which is heated under pressure for a time and at a temperature sufficient to combine chemically the liquocellulose with the reactant which are selected from acids, inorganic sulphates, sulphites, bisulphites, sulphide salts, phosphates, nitrates and halides, sodium salts, halogens, organic acid anhydrides, organic oils (defined), mono- and poly-alcohols, aldehydes, ketones, phenols, organic nitrogen compounds, organic unsaturated compounds, natural and synthetic resins and zinc dust. Other reactants may also be present and are exemplified. During the reaction lignin is thought to be released to act as a binder. Steam is preferably present during reaction, supplying both heat and the water necessary for the hydrolysis of the liquocellulose. The product may be shaped.
