Abstract

Refractory compositions consisting solely of magnesite previously calcined at a temperature which is sufficiently high to effect its substantial decomposition but which is not high enough to convert it into the dead-burnt or sintered condition, i.e. at a temperature of about 850 DEG C., iron oxide or other iron compound which yields the oxide when calcined, and a wetting or plasticizing agent such as water or tar. Refractories may be made by working the mix into a stiff paste with water and briquetting, crushing the briquets after they have set, and subsequently sintering for example at 1750 DEG C. Iron compounds specified are the sesqui-oxide, e.g. roll scale, the hydroxide, e.g. limonite, and the carbonate, e.g. chalybite; the example refers to the addition of about 5 per cent of the iron compound.
