Abstract

In the production of magnesium by thermal reduction of lime and magnesia-containing material with ferrosilicon, briquettes containing the starting materials in such proportions as to provide 110-130 per cent of the theoretical quantity of silicon necessary for the reaction, are heated in a retort under reducing conditions. The starting materials may contain calcined dolomite and ferrosilicon, the ratio of calcine to silicon being between 1 : 0.160 and 1 : 0.189. Specifications 606,636 and 606,641 are referred to.
