Abstract
Metallic calcium is produced in coherent form by thermal reduction of lime in one retort located in a furnace and condensation of calcium vapour in another zone of the retort located outside the furnace, the method being characterised in that lime-containing material mixed with aluminium as a reducing agent is charged into the reducing zone of the retort and the inner end of the condenser zone of the retort is maintained at a temperature of 740-680 DEG C. to condense calcium vapour. The condenser section may have a removable liner with insulating means for maintaining the inner end portion at a temperature not less than 740-680 DEG . The condenser lining may be coated with sodium silicate, kaolin or graphite. The charge may contain lime-containing material and aluminium in proportions to provide 105-120 per cent of the theoretical amount of aluminium for the reaction, and is preferably in the form of briquettes. Specification 270,060, [Class 82(i)], is referred to.
