Abstract

A grey zirconium silicate stain is obtained by calcining a mixture of zirconia and silica with two or more of the oxides of chromium, cobalt, iron, manganese and nickel. The proportions of these oxides in percentages by weight of the zirconia in the formed lattice are Cr2O3 0-5%; Co2O3 0-20%; Fe2O3 0-10%; MnO2 0-3%; NiO 0-10%, the total proportions of the colouring oxides not exceeding 25% by weight of the zirconia, An alkali metal fluoride is added to promote the formation of the zirconium silicate lattice. The mix is calcined at a temperature between 800 DEG and 1250 DEG C. and may be leached after calcination with concentrated hydrochloric acid.
