Abstract

Pigments are manufactured by calcining a mixture of cadmium sulphide, mercuric sulphide and an alkali metal sulphide. The cadmium sulphide may be present as such or in admixture with barium sulphate, e.g. as cadmium lithopone. The mixture is calcined at a temperature between 460 DEG and 575 DEG C. Suitable alkali sulphides are sodium or potassium sulphide or sodium polysulphide. The amount of mercuric sulphide may be from 0.08 to 0.3 mol. per mol. of cadmium sulphide, and the amount of alkali sulphide from 1 to 10 mols. per mol. of mercuric sulphide. Specification 791,098 is referred to.
