Abstract

In a process for producing a pigment by firing cadmium sulphide with mercury sulphide at a temperature of over 400 DEG C., the cadmium and/or mercury sulphide is formed in situ during the firing reaction by the interaction of sulphur with cadmium oxide and/or mercury oxide, or with cadmium and/or mercury compounds which decompose under the influence of heat to produce the oxides. When only one of the sulphides is so produced, the other may be produced by precipitation; if the sulphate of the metal, and barium sulphide, are used, barium sulphate is co-precipitated giving a pigment of the lithopone type. The firing may be carried out under pressure and/or in the presence of an inert gas. The preferred ratio of mercury sulphide to cadmium sulphide is from 10:90 to 30:60.
