Abstract

Compounds of the formula <FORM:0713652/IV (b)/1> where R1 is hydrogen, methyl, amino, hydroxyl or alkylthio (up to 5 carbon atoms) and R2 is amino, hydroxyl or methyl (one of R1 and R2 must be hydroxyl or amino) are made from a 4-aminopyrimidine carrying the appropriate R1 and R2 substituents by reaction with thiocyanogen (e.g. potassium thiocyanate and bromine), the intermediate undergoing ring closure. The reaction is carried out in a darkened room. The products are bacteriostatic. The preparation of the following thiazolo - (4 : 5 - d) - pyrimidines is described: 2 : 5 - diamino - 7 - methyl, 2 : 7 - diamino - 5-methyl, 2 : 5 : 7 - triamino, 2 - amino - 5 : 7-dihydroxy, 2 : 7 - diamino - 5 - methylthio, 2 : 5 - diamino - 7 - hydroxy and 2 : 7 - diamino.
