Abstract

Organic mono- and di-isothiocyanates are prepared by the oxidation, using chloramine-T as the oxidizing agent, of an alkali metal mono-(dithiocarbamate) salt of the formula R1NH. CSSM or an alkali metal bis-(dithiocarbamate) salt having the general formula <FORM:1024913/C2/1> in which R1 and R are aliphatic, cycloaliphatic, aromatic or mixed aliphatic-aromatic groups and M is an alkali metal. The alkali metal dithiocarbamate salt may be produced by reacting a monoamine of the formula R1-NH2 or a diamine of the formula NH2-R-NH2 with carbon disulphide and a caustic alkali. Examples are given.
