Abstract

A tetra-isoalkyl thiuram disulphide of formula R2NCS.S.S.CSNR2 where R is an isoalkyl group containing from 4 to 8 carbon atoms inclusive, is prepared by reacting an isoalkylamine under alkaline conditions with carbon disulphide with the addition of sodium hypochlorite. The tetra-isoalkyl thiuram disulphide separates as a solid from the reaction medium. An example is given of the preparation of tetra-isobutyl thiuram disulphide. The products are useful as curing accelerators, e.g. in the preparation of rubber threads (see Division C3).ALSO:A curable rubber composition incorporates a tetraisoalkyl thiuram disulphide of the formula R2NCS.SSCSNR2 where R is an isoalkyl group of from 4 to 8 carbon atoms inclusive (see Division C2). The compound may be used in conjunction with other accelerators such as zinc mercaptobenzthiazole and dithiomorpholine [O(CH2 CH2)2NSSN(CH2CH2)2O].
