Abstract

Zirconium oxide, suitable as a polishing material for glass &c., is produced by calcining at a temperature above 1050 DEG C., e.g. 1300 DEG C., zirconium cyanonitride, and reducing the particle size of the product to below 5 microns. The cyanonitride used is preferably produced by the process of Specification 544,823, being of -35 mesh size, and is calcined in a rotary calciner. The product is ground in a porcelain brick-lined mill, provided with porcelain balls, and then subjected to air - classification. -44 mesh material is then wet milled and hydraulically classified to produce the -5 micron material. In an alternative procedure, the -44 mesh material is mixed with, say, 1-3 per cent of a water-soluble alkali such as caustic soda, caustic potash or soda ash, and a similar small amount of sodium nitrate, calcined at 1050 DEG C., and thereafter wet-ground.
