Abstract

A clay composition for the making of bricks, tiles, &c. and for use as a plaster or the like is made by adding substantially pure quartz or felspar to common clay, calcining the mixture and pulverizing to a size which may be from grains of 1/4 inch diameter to the smallest powder obtainable. The amount of quartz or felspar may be from 1 to 50 per cent of the mixture. The resulting powder, with or without the addition of cement, may be mixed to a paste with water and used as a plaster or moulded into bricks &c. which are then hardened by steam. In an example, to common clay is added 5-10 per cent of its weight of pulverized felspar and the mixture is calcined in a rotary kiln having a maximum temperature of about 1250 DEG C. The clinker is ground to a fine powder in a rod mill and the powder is mixed with sufficient water to make the particles cohere. Bricks are moulded at a pressure of 200 tons and are hardened in a steam chamber at 40 lbs. per square inch for from 6 to 10 hours.
