Abstract

In the manufacture of titanium dioxide pigments from mineral rutile, the latter is admixed with an oxide or carbonate of an alkali or alkaline earth metal or of magnesium and heated, in the absence of carbon, at 800-1100 DEG C to form a mixed titanate containing a high proportion of TiO2, say 80 per cent by weight. A suitable reaction mixture consists of 50-80 per cent mineral rutile, 10-40 per cent soda ash and 5-40 per cent chalk. On digestion with, say, 94 per cent sulphuric acid, the product yields a dry, porous mass readily soluble in water or dilute sulphuric acid. Specification 408,215 is referred to.
