Abstract

A pigment is prepared by reacting aluminium sulphate and a precipitate formed by the reaction of sodium silicate and a calcium chloride-starch complex, the resulting product when dispersed to the extent of 10 per cent by weight in water, yielding a mixture having a pH within the range 3.5 to 10. The precipitate may be formed by reacting an aqueous calcium chloride-starch complex containing not more than 7.2 per cent (preferably from 1.8 to 5.4 per cent) by weight of combined calcium with aqueous sodium silicate containing not more than 30 per cent (preferably from 5 to 15 per cent) of combined sodium oxide and silicon oxide.
