Abstract

Hydrated magnesium aluminium silicate of formula 2MgO.yAl2O3.3SiO2.zH2O where y is 0.65 to 1.3 and z is such that on ignition the weight loss exceeds 20%, is prepared by reacting a stoichiometric quantity of a soluble aluminium salt with an excess of a soluble magnesium salt and an alkali metal silicate solution containing a stoichiometric quantity of SiO2 and an alkali metal oxide equivalent to the sum of the desired amounts of Al2O3 and MgO in the product, and recovering the precipitated magnesium aluminium silicate. In examples solutions of aluminium sulphate, magnesium sulphate, sodium silicate and sodium hydroxide, are reacted to obtain the magnesium aluminium silicate.
