Abstract

Hydrated magnesium aluminate containing bound sulphate, of formula 2MgO.2Al2O3.SO3 is prepared by mixing an alkali metal aluminate solution with magnesium sulphate solution in proportions of at least 1/2 gram atom of magnesium per gram atom of aluminium whilst adding an acid which forms a soluble magnesium salt, such as sulphuric, acetic or hydrochloric acid, the addition of the aluminate and acid being such that a pH of 6-10 is maintained. The precipitated product may be dried and ground and employed as an antacid (see Group VI).ALSO:A hydrated magnesium aluminate containing bound sulphate, of formula 2MgO.2Al2O3.SO3 (see Group III) is employed as an antacid in 5-grain tablets with sugar or dextrin. It may also be employed in association with analgesics which as a side effect, irritate the gastric mucosa. Reference is made to 5-grain aspirin tablets containing 2-3 grains of the hydrated magnesium aluminate containing bound sulphate.
