Abstract

A degraded carrageenin, soluble in water, insoluble in acetone and alcohol, forming aqueous solutions of reduced viscosity as compared with commercial carrageenin and having the same combined sulphate content as undegraded carrageenin, is prepared by controlled treatment of carrageenin as normally obtained from Irish moss. The commercial carrageenin is mixed with an organic liquid, e.g. acetone or alcohol, and to this is added an acid, e.g. hydrochloric acid, and the mixture allowed to stand until it is of the required viscosity. The pH is then adjusted to 7-8 with alkali, e.g. sodium hydroxide, and the degraded carrageenin precipitated with an organic non-solvent therefor, e.g. acetone or alcohol.ALSO:Pharmaceutical preparations comprise (1) fucoidin or degraded carrageenin which is soluble in water and insoluble in acetone and alcohol and forms aqueous solutions of reduced viscosity as compared with commercial carrageenin and has the same combined sulphate content as undegraded carrageenin, the degraded carrageenin being obtained by the treatment described, and (2) at least one antacid. Specified antacids are aluminium hydroxide, aluminium glycinate, sodium bicarbonate and calcium carbonate. Atropine sulphate may also be present. The preparations may be in the form of tablets, powders, granules, suspensions or solutions.
